Donald Macleod on two women who influenced Tchaikovsky's life: Nadezhda von Meck, an important patron, and Antonina Ivanovna Milyukov, to whom he had a disastrous marriage.

Two women enter Tchaikovsky's sphere, both of whom would have a profound impact on the direction of his life. The wealthy Nadezhda von Meck became the composer's most important patron, meanwhile Tchaikovsky's disastrous marriage to Antonina Ivanovna Milyukova nearly destroyed him.
