Political Survivor – Ieuan Wyn Jones

Anglesey has a new AM this week, and for the first time in 26 years the people of the island are not being represented by the man who is Roy Jenkins guest this week.

Ieuan Wyn Jones was already the constituency MP when he was elected to the new Welsh Assembly in 1999.ÌýÌýÌý Regarded as sharp strategist rather than a flamboyant performer, he’s been a great survivor - four years as deputy first minister, and twelve as leader of Plaid Cymru, winning back the positionÌý in a very short time in what one London newspaper described as ‘a recovery unequalled in British politics.’

Brought up in both North and South Wales, Ieuan Wyn Jones is a son of the manse, and three of his uncles were also Baptist ministers - a distinction extremely unlikely to be repeated in Welsh public life.

And it’s a background which offers him a rare vantage point from which to reflect on the huge social, political and religious changes in the country during his own lifetime and to inform his understanding of what should come next.
