International Recognition

Donald Macleod introduces works which launched Dvorak's international career thanks to Brahms's intervention, a publisher's leap of faith and a glowing review.

Thanks to Brahms's intervention, a publisher's leap of faith and a glowing review from an enthusiastic critic, Dvorák found himself launched from minor local celebrity to international star almost overnight. By then in his mid-30s, Dvorák already had a body of substantial works under his belt and had established his career in his Bohemian homeland. Donald Macleod introduces the works which forged Dvorák's reputation abroad, including the deeply felt choral work prompted by the death of his three children.
