It is the 50th anniversary of the first woman in space – the Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova.  It’s also 30 years since Dr Sally Ride becoming the first American woman in space. So to celebrate these achievements, space science journalist Sue Nelson, who tried to become an astronaut earlier this year when she became one of only 45 women out of 87,000 entrants to compete in the UK and Ireland space challenge, looks at the history and present of women in space.
