Food Writing

Ian McMillan explores the world of food writing in Radio 3's cabaret of the word, with guests including novelist Emma Jane Unsworth, food writer Diana Henry and the Bookshop Band.

This week The Verb is looking at Food Writing. Ian McMillan's guests include the novelist Emma Jane Unsworth, Caroline Hobkinson, an artist who creates 'Experimental Dining Experiences' and the food writer Diana Henry, who owns 4,000 cookbooks. We also have The Bookshop Band, who have written a song for us based on a book with food at its centre.

Emma Jane Unsworth

Emma Jane Unsworth

Emma Jane Unsworth is the author of Hungry, The Stars and Everything (The Hidden Gem Press). Emma put her own experience as a food writer into the novel, which follows restaurant critic Helen Burns as she sits down to an eleven course tasting menu, each course evoking memories.

Diana Henry

Diana Henry

Diana Henry is a food writer for The Sunday Telegraph and the author of ‘Salt, Sugar, Smoke’ and ‘Crazy Water, Pickled Lemons’ (Octopus). Diana owns over 4000 cookbooks, and we asked her to delve into them and read some of her favourite food writers, and explain how the best food writing is ‘evocative exactitude’.

The Bookshop Band

The Bookshop Band

The Bookshop Band write songs inspired by books and play them in bookshops. The band began as a collaboration with their local bookshop in Bath, Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights. We asked the band to write us a song based on a novel rich with descriptions of food.

Caroline Hobkinson

Caroline Hobkinson

Caroline Hobkinson plays with her food. She curates, creates and devises Experimental Dining Experiences. Her three favourite ingredients are Fishing wire, Helium and Liquid nitrogen. Caroline tells Ian how she wants to highlight the multi-sensory experience of food, and bring a sense of childlike wonder back to the table.
