Vicky Pryce On Women Prisoners

The Government has just announced plans for women prisoners to serve their sentences closer to their homes. The Ministry of Justice has said it is keen to keep women closer to their families as a way of cutting re-offending rates. So will it help? Jane talks to Vicky Pryce, author of Prisonomics: Behind Bars In Britain鈥檚 Failing Prisons, and to Conservative MP Margot James.

Rape

There are two stories related to rape in the news today: There is a five year low in the number of allegations passed on to prosecutors, at a time when there鈥檚 also been a 30 per cent rise in cases reported to Police.听 Also,听 some of the private counselling and medical records of some rape victims are being made available to defendants.听听 Jane discusses these issues with Conservative MP Margot James and shadow Attorney General, Emily Thornberry.

The journalist Rachel Cooke joins Jane to discuss ten extraordinary characters who challenged the traditional view of women in the 1950s - from a rally car driver, to a film producer, an architect, and the first woman to sit at the Old Bailey.
