Liz chats to Kristin Hersh of American alternative rock act Throwing Muses, who have just released their first new album in 10 years.
They formed in 1983 in Newport, Rhode Island by Kristin and her step sister Tanya Donelly. After releasing demos they became the first US band to sign to 4AD records, a relationship that would span their career into the early 2000s. They were at the forefront of the American alternative rock scene, distinctively fronted by the two female lead singers, who both wrote all the bands songs.
They released 7 albums between 1986 and '96 before disbanding in 1997.
They reformed in 2003 and released their 8th, self-titled album, though Tanya Donelly only provided backing vocals. The 32 track new album Purgatory/Paradise is being released as a 64 page book.
