Changes To The CSA
The Child Support Agency will stop accepting new applications at the end of next month and the will take over. Although you’ll be charged to use the service, the government is putting 20 million pounds into projects to help couples reach a voluntary agreement that is in the best interest of the child. We hear from Malachi - a project funded by the Department for Work and Pensions that’s helping parents with voluntary agreements – and we also talk about the impact of the changes with Steve Webb, the Minister responsible for child maintenance, and Caroline Davey, Director of Policy at .
Rape Figures
It’s long been suspected that, in some cases, the police have discouraged women who claim to have been raped from pursuing their allegations. It was quoted in Professor Sue Lees 1996 book Rape on Trial that it was a way of keeping down the crime figures. Now a serving Metropolitan Police Officer has confirmed that the rumours are true. James Patrick told a Commons select committee that, on the basis of his analysis of the evidence, around 25 per cent of reported rapes were classified as ‘no crime’ or ‘crime related incident.’ He joins Jenni on the phone to discuss.
Leeds Castle Housekeeper
If you've been enjoying watching Downton Abbey, you can't fail to be impressed by the army of servants who kept a stately home like that running. Things are of course very different today, but there are still women working to keep big properties going. One such is Leeds Castle in Kent. In the twentieth century it became the home of a wealthy Anglo-American heiress, Lady Baillie, who held lavish house parties there. Today the castle is open to the public and welcomes all sorts of visitors, which creates a lot of work for the staff who look after it. Louise Adamson has been getting a lesson in cleaning from the housekeeping supervisor, Karen Fryer.
