Review of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Claudia and Chris' film of the week

Review of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Claudia and Chris' film of the week

Claudia: My son is almost 11.听 He鈥檚 obsessed, he鈥檚 counting the minutes, he鈥檚 literally set his timer until when he can see this movie鈥 love the first film, I think it was all about her [Jennifer Lawrence]. I mean, you can鈥檛 stop staring at her鈥 love it! I thought it was long, I wanted something to happen at the end, but that鈥檚 just me.

Danny: I think it鈥檚 actually better than the first movie. I think it鈥檚 kind of lean and slick and relentless and it鈥檚 relentlessly cynical for a movie that鈥檚 aimed at teenagers. The message of this movie is that you can鈥檛 trust the government, you can鈥檛 trust the media, you can鈥檛 trust people in show business, so we鈥檙e all screwed. And I think that鈥檚 a really healthy message to tell the youth today. I鈥檓 kind of a fan.

Chris: I really, really liked it鈥nd this movie is better than the first movie, as far as I can tell. It鈥檚 more gripping; it鈥檚 more adult, it鈥檚 very much grown up, I felt, it鈥檚 not really aimed at kids, although 10 years olds will love it as well. Jennifer Lawrence is fantastic. And it鈥檚 constantly surprising as well 鈥 things happened that I just didn鈥檛 see coming.

Review of Parkland

Review of Parkland

Claudia: It is a shame, because it鈥檚 a great idea鈥ecause it鈥檚 reverential isn鈥檛 it? Because it has to be and you want it to be reverential and grown up, but at other times it becomes comedy鈥t鈥檚 made by a brilliant journalist, apparently, he was passionate about this film, begged the executive producer, Tom Hanks, to let him direct it himself and you can imagine him just gathering all the research and all the information.

Danny: Some movies are inspired because someone involved feels very passionate, feels very inspired and wants to bring a story to the world. And others are made because someone in the studio was browsing on Wikipedia and noticed the 50th anniversary was coming up. And that鈥檚 what Parkland feels like, it never really gets over that鈥ou don鈥檛 learn anything, and you don鈥檛 feel anything.

Chris: This may have been rushed out in time for the anniversary of JFK鈥檚 50th anniversary, which is a little tawdry from my point of view.听 There鈥檚 no doubt this is a good idea for a film, making a movie based around the other people who were involved in the JFK assassination and Lee Harvey Oswald subsequently 3 days later. It鈥檚 a good idea for a film. Unfortunately, this is a little dull, it鈥檚 a little rote, it鈥檚 not Parkland, it鈥檚 鈥淧arka-land.鈥 It just sits there like an anorak, on a coat rack. It just doesn鈥檛 really work.

Review of The Family

Review of The Family

Claudia: Michelle Pfeiffer is always unbelievably wonderful. I just love everything about her. I do, I do鈥he problem is, it鈥檚 incredibly violent鈥t might have been great on the page.

Danny: I don鈥檛 know how much money Robert De Niro needs, or why he鈥檚 doing this movie鈥 just want it on record that if it鈥檚 the money, I will donate. I will go onto the telephone and give pretty much everything for him to stop doing this鈥here鈥檚 just this tone-deafness to this movie.

Chris: For me, this was probably the worst film of the year. I absolutely hated it. This was an ordeal for me watching this movie. And it鈥檚 monumentally misjudged from frame one to frame eight-million.

Review of Vendetta

Review of Vendetta

Claudia: [For] 100 grand, three weeks long 鈥 It鈥檚 impressive鈥he film is incredibly long and it鈥檚 incredibly violent.

Danny: It looks great, actually. I think there鈥檚 a real sense of nocturnal London in the backdrop. But I think it鈥檚 a lot better directed than it is written.听 I think some of the lines here have never been said by anyone who hasn鈥檛 just got off a spaceship. And no actor should really be asked to deliver those kinds of lines.

Chris: Danny Dyer is interesting, because he鈥檚 become something of a critical punching bag 鈥 almost a punch line, in many many ways. But underneath it all, underneath all the finger pointing and laughing, he鈥檚 actually an underrated actor, he can deliver when he wants to and he鈥檚 an effective presence in this movie.
