Rodigan and the New Roots Reggae Movement
DJ David Rodigan explores Jamaica's New Roots Movement which has seen a resurgence in the popularity and production of roots reggae music in Jamaica.
In the second of 1Xtra Stories' two-part special recorded in Jamaica, DJ David Rodigan heads to Kingston to discover more about what is commonly known as the 'Roots Rock Reggae Revival'.
Roots rock reggae, or roots reggae, is a subgenre of reggae that started in the 1970's and focuses on conscious themes, from everyday lives and social issues to spirituality and religion. The music is created by the artists with the intention of spreading a positive message, rather than for commercial gain or fame.
Over the years, the rise in popularity of dancehall seemed to overtake roots reggae, but recent years have seen a revival in the genre. Throughout this programme Rodgian explores this resurgence, speaking to some of the artists at the forefront of the scene and finding out why the movement is so important.
Featuring artists, producers and engineers from both the first generation of roots rock reggae including Luciano, King Jammy and Gussie Clarke; AND the second generation including Chronixx, Tarrus Riley and the Pentateuch band. You can expect to hear from the key people behind the birth and so-called rebirth of arguably Jamaica's biggest musical genre.
