Pause for Thought

I have to say that this is probably the first Pause for Thought ever about leprosy 鈥� not an easy breakfast subject!聽 But bear with me.聽 Last Saturday鈥檚 Torah reading was from Leviticus. It really got me thinking.. The passage is about what is usually translated as leprosy, though it was probably some other skin disease, as you could recover from it quite quickly. The priests examined those with the rashes or boils, and, if it was 鈥榣eprosy鈥�, the patient had to leave the settlement in case they infected other people. There was leprosy of houses too-probably like dry rot, and in clothes too. It all sounds like some fungal condition, but, whatever it was, the priests acted like public health doctors, and tried to keep the population safe. By the middle ages, genuine lepers were seen as dangerous, and often had to wear a bell round their necks to warn of their impending approach. We know now that they were not infectious. Similarly, in the early days of AIDS, some people thought AIDS sufferers should be labelled in some way, quite wrongly, and wholly judgmentally. But what about the deadly Ebola virus that is claiming so many lives in Africa right now? Well, it鈥檚 not for the priests these days. It鈥檚 for the public health doctors. And those people do need to be isolated. Their healthcare staff need to wear fully protective clothing.聽 We all accept isolation and other public health measures when really necessary. But what emerged from later interpretation of that Biblical text we read on Saturday was a view that those with that disease, whatever it was, had acquired it as a punishment for sin. Moses鈥� sister Miriam was turned white as snow with 鈥榣eprosy鈥� for bad mouthing Moses鈥� new bride. Gehazi, Elisha鈥檚 servant, was afflicted with leprosy for claiming gifts from the Syrian commander Na鈥檃man when Elisha had refused them. I think that is outdated and dangerous thinking. Illness is a misfortune. Lifestyle may contribute to some conditions, but leprosy, psoriasis, many cancers, other conditions, are not people鈥檚 fault. We shouldn鈥檛 blame the sufferers. Our job is to comfort them, and to search for ways of alleviating the symptoms. One day, we might find a cure.
