Volunteers have knocked on eight million doors in the past week asking for money for the poorest people in the world.ÌýÌý Christian Aid Week, with its aim this year of raising £13 million, remains the country’s biggest fund-raising exercise of its kind.

Loretta Minghella comes from a colourful family.Ìý Her sister is a jazz singer. Her younger brother writes for television, and her elder brother was the Oscar-winning film director, the late Anthony Minghella, who was responsible for such hits as The English Patient and Truly, Madly Deeply.

Loretta Minghella herself is an official taster for her family’s celebrated ice-cream firm, though her ability to pronounce on a citrus mint twist or a chocolate orange delight is likely to be less significant than her experience as a lawyer and as chief executive of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.Ìý In five years, she oversaw the payout of a staggering £21 billion.ÌýÌý
