Live from HMS Belfast

Jeremy is live from HMS Belfast on the 70th anniversary of D-Day. He discusses what the ship did to support the landings and talk to veterans who tell us their memories.

The Jeremy Vine Show broadcasts live from the HMS Belfast to mark the seventieth anniversary of D-Day, when allied forces entered German-occupied France in the largest seaborne invasion in history and set the clock ticking on the end of the Second World War. It's part of an incredible day of commemoration on 大象传媒 Radio 2 which culminates in Friday Night is Music Night at the Royal Albert Hall. The HMS Belfast is now moored on the River Thames as a floating museum. However, the warship played a crucial role in D-Day. It spent five weeks supporting the Normandy landings and reportedly fired one of the first shots on the day itself. The Jeremy Vine Show on 6 June will tell the story of D-Day through the eyes of those who served on the ship and the troops she helped. We'll speak to veterans who were there. We'll talk about what it was like to be in charge of the Belfast as well as the realities of daily life for an ordinary sailor - the fears, the job, the accommodation and the food. Jeremy will race up the Thames on a speedboat and we'll fire one of the guns on board the ship. We'll also discuss the HMS Belfast's other vital role in the Second World War: its protection of the Arctic convoys that supplied our Russian allies. And music will be provided by a sea shanty choir on its decks.
