Contributors & Interviewees

The Venerable John Holliman

A former Archdeacon to the Army, John Holliman is a Trustee of the Museum of Army Chaplaincy.听 He was a friend and colleague of The Revd Thomas Henry Lovegrove who was Chaplain to the 6th Bn The Green Howards, and who was awarded the Military Cross for his actions on D-Day.听 Medals and other artefacts belonging to Lovegrove are kept at the Museum of Army Chaplaincy.

Edward Turner

Life-long Christian, Ted Turner was a British Royal Marine who, with British Canadian troops, took part in the assault on Juno Beach, aged just 18.听 In memory of his friends, Ted makes regular visits to Normandy.

Sandra Lawrence

From a military family herself, artist Sandra Lawrence was commissioned by Lord Dulverton to design the Overlord Embroidery, with advice from senior military figures from each of the armed forces, and basing her designs on photographs and eyewitness accounts.

Musicians

Convivium Singers

Convivium Singers is a prize-winning, critically acclaimed ensemble noted for its recordings and performances of little-known British choral music. The group gives concerts at national and international festivals, recitals, and performs with fewer members for private functions.

Locations

Museum of Army Chaplaincy

Housed in the converted old stable block of Amport House, the Museum of Army Chaplaincy tells the story of Army Chaplaincy from earliest times to the present day with the help of archive material and historical relics from several centuries. The Museum of Army Chaplaincy houses the archives and historical relics of RAChD and its chaplains, and unlike most military museums does not include any weapons or ammunition, since the chaplains are non-combatant and their work is to sustain not destroy.

The Museum displays cover six themes: Faith in Captivity; Celebrating the Faith; Faith in service of Peace; Faith under Fire; Faith in Uniform and Teaching the Faith. Displays include poignant Far East POW items, Church silver and furnishings, uniforms and the stories of the four chaplains who have been awarded the Victoria Cross.

HMS Calshot, Port of Southampton

HMS Calshot was involved on D-Day as a non-assault Headquarters ship at the 'J' for Juno area. Prior to this she was on trooping duties in Scotland transferring servicemen from HMT Queen Mary and HMT Queen Elizabeth.听This was only one of her duties with the former Cunard liners Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth before returning to Southampton for the build up to D-Day.听Calshot is berthed in Trafalgar Dock, Southampton and on board is a D-Day photographic exhibition.

Church of St John the Baptist

Ted Turner鈥檚 interview with Pam Rhodes took place at the church of St John The Baptist, Purbrook, Portsmouth.

D-Day Museum & Overlord Embroidery

Portsmouth鈥檚 D-Day Museum is Britain鈥檚 only museum dedicated solely to covering all aspects of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. The Museum鈥檚 centrepiece is the magnificent Overlord Embroidery. At 272 feet (83 metres) in length, this is the world鈥檚 longest embroidery of its kind, and the Twentieth Century equivalent of the Bayeux Tapestry. It was commissioned by Lord Dulverton of Batsford (1915-92) as a tribute to the sacrifice and heroism of those men and women who took part in Operation Overlord. Designed by artist Sandra Lawrence, the Embroidery took artisans at the Royal School of Needlework five years to complete.

Cathedral Church of St Thomas of Canterbury (Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral)

鈥淏efore The Ending Of The Day鈥 was filmed in the location in which it was recorded: the Cathedral Church of St Thomas, Portsmouth.
