Britain at War - Outbreak

Penny Gore presents music linked to the UK at war. Stanford: Irish Rhapsody No 5. Howells: Piano Concerto No 1. Bliss: String Quartet. Strauss: Don Juan. Dvorak: Cello Concerto.

Part of Radio 3's WWI season, Music in the Great War.

Penny Gore introduces an afternoon of music connected with the UK at war, featuring music by the Irishman Sir Charles Villiers Stanford and two of his composition pupils at the Royal College of Music: Howells and Bliss. Howells' First Piano Concerto was his first major orchestral work, and the 1914 premiere was conducted by Stanford. It is notable for the colour and brilliance of his orchestration as well as the extremely demanding piano writing. The afternoon also includes performances of Strauss and Dvorak from the 大象传媒 Philharmonic.
