Jackie Kay
For the Milton Keynes International Festival Jackie has collaborated with Dutch artist Gijs van Bo, who has created a mechanical sandwriter to write Jackie’s poem in sand across the city. Jackie explains how writing in sand has led her to explore memory and forgetting.
DBC Pierre
DBC Pierre won the Booker Prize in 2003 for ‘Vernon God Little’ (Faber). ‘Breakfast with the Borgias’ (Hammer) is Pierre’s new novella. He explains to Ian why horror in the modern age can be as simple as being without a phone signal for the weekend, and how he overcame the plotting challenges that come with writing a novella.
Carys Bray
‘A Song For Issy Bradley’ (Hutchinson) is Carys Bray’s first novel, an exploration of grief, and the redemptive power of family. The book is set within the Mormon community of Southport where Carys grew up.
Song of the Sea
The last in our series of WWI dramas is Kenneth Emson’s Song of the Sea. Inspired by the letters of Daisy Dobbs, who was on board the Ambulance Transport ship the Warilda when it was catastrophically torpedoed in 1918.

Martin Carthy
Martin Carthy has been a fixture on the folk scene since his debut album was released in 1965. His latest album is ‘The Moral of the Elephant’ (Topic), a collaboration with his daughter Eliza Carthy. Martin tells Ian how he finds new meaning in songs as he grows older.
