The Beales are informed of the latest developments in Lucy's murder investigation. Lee discovers Tina's secret scheme, Jay is stunned when he learns what Max has been up to.
On Bridge Street, Peter watches DI Keeble approach the Beales’ with DS Bryant. Billy’s nervous, convinced they’re going to tell Ian about his argument with Lucy, and notes the market bin bags haven’t been collected. At the Beales’, Keeble explains that DCI Irving has been reassigned and, due to new witness statements, Jake is being released. Peter’s frustrated. Ian struggles to accept that Jake’s innocent and despairs they’ll never catch Lucy’s killer. Keeble insists they have new leads and are still searching for Lucy’s phone and purse.
Outside, Lola convinces a nervy Billy to take Janet to his allotment. Inside, Keeble’s unimpressed when Emma rushes in late. Once Keeble and Bryant depart, Ian questions Emma about the new witness. Peter recalls seeing Emma in Walford yesterday. Meanwhile, on the allotments, Patrick’s woken by Janet squirting him with a plant spray. Stressed, Billy snaps at Janet. Patrick’s concerned for him. At the Beales’, Emma regrets she can’t reveal who the new witness is or she’ll lose her job. Billy breathes a sigh of relief when Lola phones with the all clear.
Later, Mick arrives to pick Ian up for a swimming lesson. Ian tells him Jake’s been released and wonders how Mick coped with Lee being away – not knowing what happened to your child is the worst thing imaginable. Torn, Mick tells Ian to sit down. Billy’s enjoying a drink with Patrick and Janet in the Vic when Ian storms in, demanding to know what Billy’s hiding and goes for him, convinced he’s got Lucy’s phone and purse. Ian’s held back by Patrick and Mick while Phil ushers Billy out. Billy leaves Janet with Whitney at the Butchers’ and sets out to tell Peter himself, oblivious to Ian watching him from the Square gardens.
Billy heads for home, conscious of people staring as he heads down Bridge Street. He clocks the market bin bags finally being loaded into a rubbish truck, and breaks into a run. At the flat, Peter’s hugging Lola and apologizing for his recent moody behaviour when Billy bursts in. Misunderstanding, Billy gabbles he wanted to tell Peter himself, to Lola’s horror. Ian enters to find a raging Peter pinning Billy against the wall. Now calm, Ian pulls Peter off, insisting they deal with things properly, and demands Billy explain himself. Billy tells Ian, Denise and Peter the full story and explains Lucy was disgusted with him for stealing fish from Ian - he didn’t tell the police because he was ashamed.
Billy breaks down in tears, pleading that he couldn’t commit murder for the sake of a part time job. Ian relents, agreeing Billy can keep his job, but no longer trusts himself to judge who killed Lucy - that’s for the police to decide. That night, a hole is dug on Billy’s allotment and Lucy’s phone and purse are thrown into the hole before it’s filled in.
Mick thinks it’s a shame Linda’s got rid of her new hairstyle. Linda claims the photo-shoot made her feel old. Later, Dean brings Linda the group photo from the shoot. Linda stiffly informs him not to touch her again. Dean heads off, leaving the photo on the bar. Later, Mick surprises an unhappy Linda with the photo, now framed, up on the kitchen wall.
Jay fusses that Abi will be late for East London University’s open day and Abi accuses him of being biased, although Jay claims he doesn’t mind which Uni she attends. Lauren arrives with a surprise announcement – she’s moving home. Later, after rowing all day, Jay’s convinced Abi will go to Liverpool. On Phil’s advice, Jay slips in the back door to leave Abi some apology chocolates and is stunned to see Max locked in a passionate embrace with Emma Summerhayes.
On Bridge Street, Lee attempts to stealthily follow Whitney to the café and asks her out for a drink but Whitney’s immune to his charms. Tina offers to reveal the secret to winning a girl over in exchange for help at the café. During the shift, Lee comes across Tina’s stash of weed. Tina explains she’s dealing to raise money to have a family and swears him to secrecy. Lee’s disappointed when Tina laughs she normally wins a girl over by getting her boobs out.
