Pause for Thought
From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:
Ìý
The raising of the UK terror threat level from ‘substantial’ to ‘severe’ made me wonder if having that information is helpful or simply fuels fear. After all there’s not a lot most of us can do about it. Of course fear isn’t necessarily bad. It can alert us to real threats, triggering reactions in our bodies that set up the fight or flight responses we may need for survival. On the other hand fear can be paralysing, or cut us off from others who could be friends, if we but knew it. Sometimes it’s a reaction that has more to do with misperceptions or painful past experiences than present reality. It tends to make us generalise and to see things in black and white terms: I’m right – you’re wrong. They’re bad – we’re good. Everything’s going wrong – nothing can change this. Aaah! Courage is not about being fearless but about finding ways to carry on our lives despite being afraid.
Ìý
The first step is to face the fear - with the help of others if it’s likely we’ll be overwhelmed on our own. Sometimes when we confront what we fear, we find our fear is groundless, or the threat less than we imagined, or that things are not as black and white as we thought. But, if our fear is justified, then knowing what the reality actually is gives us the chance to decide how to deal with it. Recently I had the privilege of filming a conversation with Lord Joel Joffe. He was on the defence team at the Rivonia Trial in South Africa in 1963/4 which ended in Nelson Mandela, among others, being sentenced to life imprisonment. The defendants could have received the death penalty, but Joel told me how they faced that possibility head on and decided to turn their trial into a trial of the apartheid government in the court of world opinion. They weren’t cowed by their fear but empowered by the way they chose to respond to it. They show that to take fear seriously is not to be ruled by it but to take control of it and to use it for a greater purpose.
