The Role of Women in British Asian Communities

The sexual abuse and exploitation of 1400 girls,听mainly white,听in Rotherham by men predominantly of Pakistani origin has caused shock and outrage. Last week鈥檚 report lists systemic failings on the part of the police and the council as well as others. How important was the role of women among British-Pakistanis in stopping more people speaking out about the abuse? What can be done to give British-Pakistani women a louder voice?

She was born in South Korea and, age 11, she was taken under the wing of the renowned Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich after she won his International Cello Competition. She's performed around the world and she's released numerous bestselling albums. She joins Jenni to talk about why she's putting her accomplished career as a world class cellist aside and rebranding herself as a conductor.

Jeanette Winterson鈥檚 1985 novel, Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, is a semi-autobiographical account of coming of age as a lesbian and a writer, interwoven with elements of the mythical and the fantastic. 听It tells the story of a young girl discovering her sexuality, and the beginning of her search to be herself.听听talks to Jenni Murray about her ground breaking novel and its place in women鈥檚 writing almost thirty years after its publication.听听

Introducing a New Sibling to the Family

Lauren Child, creator of 鈥楥harlie and Lola鈥, has written and illustrated a new picture book called 鈥楾he New Small Person鈥 about introducing a new sibling to the family. The book is about a small boy called Elmore Green, whose happy life is disrupted by the arrival of a little brother. Lauren joins Jenni to discuss the inspiration behind her new book and why she believes more children鈥檚 books should depict characters who are not white. Jenni is also joined by Dr Alison Pike, a reader in psychology at the University of Sussex, who specialises in siblings, to discuss the best way to introduce baby number two and how to manage sibling rivalry.

Cook the Perfect... Barnsley Chop

British chef听听has become a familiar figure on our TV screens, appearing on shows such as The Great British Menu,听Saturday Kitchen,听Food and Drink听and听The Great British Food Revival. His gastropub The Hand & Flowers appears in the Good Food Guide top 50 and is the first pub in the UK to hold two Michelin stars.

But Tom had humble beginnings and learnt to cook out of necessity - as a latchkey kid brought up by a single mum in Gloucestershire he often had to cook tea for his little brother. In his new book, Tom Kerridge鈥檚 Best Ever Dishes, he puts his own twist on well-known classic dishes. He joins Jenni to听and talk about how he discovered his passion for cooking at the age of 18.

Tom Kerridge鈥檚 Best Ever Dishes is published by Bloomsbury and his book will be accompanied by a听听in the autumn.
