Prayer for the Day Monday 8th September with Revd Dr Martyn Atkins

Good morning.
After years of faithful service my GPS ‘sat nav’ has finally bitten the dust. It’s guided me around the country and throughout Europe, but when I set it to go ‘home’ in a town unknown to me, it died!
What surprised me was how utterly at sea I was. I knew basically where I was and exactly where I was going, but had no idea which way to go at the end of the street.
It was an interesting journey home. I got lost in a one way system and pulled over and asked someone for instructions, south if possible. With many gesticulations and a short chat she obliged and more by luck than memory I made it to a major road.
Then it came to me that I may still have, lurking in the boot, something I hadn’t looked at for years. And there it was: a 2007 road atlas of Great Britain.
And you know what - it was a most enjoyable journey! I noticed all sorts: how one place related to another when I’d assumed they were far apart; a major change in direction round a national park boundary; a place of historical interest; and not constantly looking to see if my estimated time of arrival was getting earlier or later.
I will buy a new sat nav, if only not to get lost in one way systems. But I may turn it off more often, and actually enjoy the journey rather than simply get to where I’m going.
Lord of life, guide us and all those we love safely through this day. Grant to us moments to talk and listen, to look and wonder, learn and grow, and so be enriched and renewed by the journey which is today. Amen.
