Do we have too many licensed premises in Scotland?
Scottish neighbourhoods with the most licensed premises have the highest rates of alcohol-related illness and deaths, according to a new study. Death rates are more than double in areas with the most bars and off-licences, according to Alcohol Focus Scotland. Hospital admissions are "significantly higher" in neighbourhoods with easier access to alcohol.

Is 'old' an offensive description?

Professor Mary Beard has said that the public should embrace the word 'old' to combat the stereotype of a 'hunched little old lady' often seen in modern culture. She believes the word old should now be something which fills people with pride. Speaking at the Cheltenham Literary festival, she says she wants to see a redefinition of the connotations of the word old, in line with other changes in attitude to race and sexuality.
