Crucial Vinyl: Patti Smith - Horses

The Don's Crucial Vinyl, an album that has shaped his musical taste, is Horses by Patti Smith.

Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him.

This week he chooses Horses by Patti Smith.

Don says, "Patti Smith is rightly credited as being a major inspiration for the New York punk scene.
Her debut album Horses in 1975 influenced everyone, as it coincided with the emerging UK punk scene too. Its impact on women everywhere was obvious, but it struck men too - particularly me.

I saw Patti live at The Roundhouse in London in 1976, and soon afterwards she stumbled into my shop Acme Attractions on the Kings Road. She liked my dub reggae soundtrack and mentioned that she was a fan of Tapper Zukie, who happened to be a mate of mine.

Cut to yours truly live on stage at the Hammersmith Odeon a few months later with a mic in my hand, Patti writhing at my feet and Tapper Zukie on guitar. Patti had asked us along to see her show, and suddenly, without warning, dragged us on stage in front of a packed house not knowing I'd never been on stage, much less held a mic, and Tapper couldn't play guitar. Talk about punk rock!".
