Good morning. 20 years on since Britain鈥檚 first national lottery draw and loads of millionaires have been created and charities helped; churches not least amongst the beneficiaries.聽 I鈥檝e a sneaking feeling, however, that it may possibly have changed some of our attitudes about the nature of giving.
My local church used to run a breakfast club for youngsters in an area of social need. During the week of that very first lottery draw two children came to us full of excitement because their parents had said they鈥檇 be going to Disneyland鈥 when they won the lottery.聽 I remember thinking they were in for a tough lesson about promises built upon chance.
I鈥檝e noticed something interesting too, when talking with young people about charitable giving to tackle world problems such as poverty or diseases like ebola: Frequently they鈥檒l suggest that they鈥檒l give as adults 鈥淚f they win the lottery鈥: Does dreaming of acquiring great wealth make us less able to imagine being generous in more ordinary ways?
There鈥檚 a striking story in the Gospels of one of the few people who encountered Christ and didn鈥檛 follow him: A rich young ruler who found that his personal wealth was a huge barrier when Jesus challenged him to donate his possessions to the poor.
Lots of organisations now seem to buy in to the principle that we鈥檙e more likely to give, if we can get something back, so I鈥檓 frequently invited to enter prize draws, rather than being asked for a simple donation.
In a culture where giving鈥檚 routinely attached to chance of a large payback I wonder about the place of selfless giving.聽聽 I think this presents a challenge to all involved in charitable work, and those whose welfare is dependent upon the kindness of others.
Generous God, help me to be aware of all that鈥檚 good in my life today and of all that I receive. When I enjoy plenty, inspire me with thankfulness that I may be more open-handed in giving to those in need. Amen.
