The Science of Sound
Chris Smith and Kat Arney host a special edition from the Cambridge Science Centre, exploring the science of sound - what is it and does it work?
Sound is one of the fundamentals of life and essential for communication right across the animal kingdom. Think of bats which use high frequency sound to echo locate where they are in the dark, or whales which send very low frequency messages to their mates over huge distances. So what is sound? And how does it work? Those are the questions we're going to answer in this special edition of 5 live Science which was recorded with an audience at the Cambridge Science Centre. We talk to four scientists who specialise in frequencies, wavelengths, amplitude, and all that jazz. We'll be explaining the physics of how sound is made. There's news of new computer software being developed to make hearing aids better. We'll be finding out how research on owls could make quieter aeroplanes. And an opera singing scientist will be telling us how to shatter a wine glass.
