Pause for Thought
From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:
听
When something terrible happens, like yesterday鈥檚 terror attack in Paris, lots of words are spoken that probably should be left unsaid. Knee-jerk reactions often leave much to be desired. In the gospels when a group of men in a heightened emotional state come to see Jesus demanding his point of view, his first action is to spend time silently drawing in the sand before he finally makes a useful response. With that image in mind, you鈥檒l understand why I sat for a long time yesterday before writing the reflections I offer hesitantly now. First of all, my heart goes out to those who鈥檝e been bereaved or injured through this attack. Working as I do with communities living with the legacy of conflict I know how a few short minutes of violence can leave lives devastated for decades. Secondly, I think of all my Muslim friends and colleagues who will be both appalled and made to feel more vulnerable through the actions of killers who claim to belong to the same faith. 听Thirdly, I remember crouching in the house of peace-building Muslim friends in another part of the world while rocks rained down on their roof, hurled by extremists from another faith, and I wondered why the moderate members of that other faith let their brothers get away with such attacks on innocent people. When terrorism occurs it鈥檚 important not to tar everyone with the same brush and label whole communities as bad or murderous because of the actions of a few. Such generalisations leave many innocent and good people at risk of revenge attacks. But there鈥檚 a deeper question that we all need to take seriously. What must we do when people in our own community or family do terrible things from which we want to distance ourselves? Like it or not they may well share the same roots, and disowning them doesn鈥檛 actually deal with the problem of why they鈥檝e come to see violence as legitimate. My hope is that today we hold back from knee-jerk reactions, and focus instead on care for the victims, as well as taking the time and trouble to understand the deeper dynamics of why terror attacks happen, so that we can help reduce the risk of them happening again.
