The 大象传媒 National Orchestra of Wales in Wagner: Siegfried Idyll. Mathias: Flute Concerto. Gareth Glyn: Gododdin. Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream (excerpts).

Verity Sharp presents a recent concert by the 大象传媒 National Orchestra of Wales at St Asaph Cathedral, part of the North Wales International Music Festival. Music by Wagner, Mathias, Gareth Glyn and Mendelssohn.

Mendelssohn loved the British Isles and adored Shakespeare, writing the overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream when he was only 17 and somehow recapturing that youthful spirit when he added to it a sequence of incidental music nearly two decades later. The programme begins with Wagner's birthday present to his wife Cosima, the Siegfried Idyll, before works by two major Welsh composers. 大象传媒 NOW's principal flute Matthew Featherstone plays William Mathias's late Flute Concerto, and the orchestra gives the premiere of Gareth Glyn's Gododdin, which takes its inspiration from the 13th-century Book of Aneirin.
