Pause for Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:
Last Friday, at our eve of Sabbath service, unprecedented crowds came along, including a lot of young French people, The story of the kosher supermarket in Paris was still unfolding- it was not clear then how many had died, nor how many injured. On Sunday afternoon, vast crowds rallied and marched for unity and tolerance in Paris, and smaller rallies were held in other French cities. In London, a smaller rally and march was also well attended. It鈥檚 a response of sorts to the vile events of last week, which leave us all shocked. In the Jewish community, we鈥檙e preparing for additional security measures, and know we need to be vigilant. But, as we said our memorial prayer at services at the weekend, we read out the names of all who鈥檇 died, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, of no particular faith. For the attack is on us all, and we mourn each and every victim.
One truly bright thing has emerged from the horrors. And that is human kindness and support people have shown to one another. The attacks displayed a vicious terror and disregard for human life. But, in the kosher supermarket, it was a Muslim staff member who hid people in the cold room, and saved their lives, whilst one of the policemen killed defending Charlie Hebdo, the satirical magazine, was also a Muslim, and a proud Frenchman and defender of free speech to boot. In our Sabbath service on Friday, people were hugging each other, for comfort and to symbolise unity, in a very un-British way.聽 At the march on Sunday, world leaders linked arms to show unity and revulsion against these attacks- and that included Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
So, as we mourn and grieve, lick our wounds and deal with our shock, we have to remember the real heroes amongst the horror, and that the response to these attacks has made people behave better than we might have expected. And that fact, despite the horror of it all, should strengthen our faith in our fellow human beings, and bring us comfort.
