大象传媒 SSO - Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, Glazunov

The 大象传媒 SSO conducted by Ilan Volkov. Shostakovich: King Lear (Music from the film). Mussorgsky: Songs and Dances of Death (with Yuri Vorobiev: bass). Glazunov: The Seasons.

Live from City Halls, Glasgow

Presented by Ian Skelly

The 大象传媒 Scottish Symphony Orchestra and its Principal Guest Conductor, Ilan Volkov, give a concert of some rare Russian gems. They perform a suite of Shostakovich's music from the 1971 film based on King Lear directed by Grigori Kozintsev. The orchestra is joined by Yuri Vorobiev to perform an orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky's dark and brooding song-cycle, Songs and Dances of Death.

And the concert concludes with a key work by a hugely influential figure in the fin de si猫cle Russian music world: Glazunov. His 'The Seasons' is a 1-act ballet first performed at the St Petersburg Imperial Ballet in 1900. Full of the magic and sparkle of Russian theatre music, it captures, in its deftly orchestrated music, the changing atmospheres of the Russian landscapes as winter passes to autumn.
