Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

On Sunday evening, as the culmination of a week of commemoration of the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, we held a service at Westminster Abbey, led by their clergy and ours, an amazing thing for the Abbey to do. The sight of men wearing skullcaps, the sound of the choirs singing in Hebrew and Yiddish, the fact that everyone, Jew and Christian alike, sang the hymns together, was profoundly uplifting. Two survivors spoke, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, the surviving member of the women’s orchestra of Auschwitz, and Zigi Shipper, also a survivor, and were painfully moving. I had to give the address. What to say other than ‘Never again’? But, while thinking about it, I read accounts of British POWs in Monowitz, an Auschwitz satellite camp. Some of these British POWs passed scraps of food to the Jews, at great personal risk. Others,  forced labourers, placed stones in the pipes they were forced to make, as a form of sabotage.

One suspicious German engineer ordered a pressure test on the pipes. The POWs knew it would fail- and they would be shot. But the air raid siren went off. Arthur Dodd, one of the prisoners, wrote:

"We knew… they had found out what we had done. They had us lined up against a wall to shoot us as soon as the pipes failed the test. I had just said a prayer when the air-raid siren went and everyone… dived into the air raid shelters. We heard a bomb fall ….. the only bomb to hit the factory had blown out the wall where the pipes were. God was looking after us that day..."

He may have thought God was looking after them, but one major theological question after Auschwitz is where was God? The only comprehensible answer is that it wasn’t God, but human beings, who committed this evil. So we have to be grateful for the few good people, like Arthur Dodd and another POW, Charles Joseph Coward, who is estimated to have saved at least 400 Jewish slave labourers. These men, imprisoned and abused in Auschwitz themselves, came to be guardian angels for some Jewish inmates. People like these men are to be remembered and celebrated. Even in the midst of terrible human evil, good people do emerge, and allow us hope.
