Pause For Thought
Yesterday HRH the Prince of Wales gave an interview to Radio Two鈥檚 The Sunday hour in which he reflected on the plight of Christians in the Middle East, issues of radicalisation and extremism, the right to freedom of worship, and of interfaith relations. The Prince said, 鈥淚 think the secret is that we have to work harder to build bridges and we have to remember that our Lord taught us to love our neighbour, to do to others as you would do to you.鈥
It is a sentiment which is echoed within the Islamic faith, 鈥淏e good to the neighbour who is your relative and to the neighbour who is not a relative鈥 says the Qur鈥檃n.
As someone who has enjoyed the benefit of authentically knowing and loving God through two world faiths, and whose family is Christian, I have always felt a strong impulse to build bridges of knowledge between faiths. We share so much more than differ. Yet the work is not easy, and the current global situation pulls people apart.
Falling into the trap of stereotyping 鈥渢he other鈥 is not a way to build stable communities. We have to resist calls of those whose hearts are filled with hate, or those-driven by fear-who call us to reject values of tolerance and common humanity. Every community, every religion has people of this type.
The Prince reflected on how the Prophet Muhammad had fled persecution,聽seeking refuge with the Christian King of Abyssinia. Later, when the Prophet聽was in a position of leadership, he welcomed Christians into the heart of聽the Muslim community in Medina. 鈥淭he more you discover about other people鈥檚 faiths, the more you begin to understand... Distortions are the very things that lead to misunderstanding and misinterpretation鈥 explained the Prince.
I could not agree with him more. Religion itself does not cause war. People cause war, and use religion - amongst other things- to justify their violence, their hatred, or their vision of 鈥減ure lands鈥- free of the natural diversity of God鈥檚 creation. We have to resist such ideas, and reach out to one another in friendship and in love.
