Tonight's concert features two stirring evocations of the natural world. Mendelssohn's ever-popular overture was inspired by a visit to Fingal's Cave, a landmark so striking that the likes of Wordsworth, Keats and JMW Turner were all seduced by it.

Mahler's portrayal of nature awakening follows, replete with bird-calls and the sound of a marching town band punctuating a haunting, minor-key version of the children's favourite, 'Fr猫re Jacques'.
