Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Rabbi Pete Tobias of the Liberal Synagogue, Elstree:

I鈥檓 feeling very smug, Chris. I鈥檝e been dieting and today I reached my target weight and am back in my 30鈥 waist skinny jeans. I got to this point (where I was a year ago and also three years ago, as I recall), by sticking to a strict diet, which meant giving up all kinds of food that I love. The fact that my weight keeps yo-yoing shows how difficult it is for me to abstain from things that are bad for me.

Today is Shrove Tuesday, which means that in Christian tradition, many people are on the verge of entering a forty-day period of abstinence. It鈥檚 the day when,聽in this and many other countries, people are encouraged to put whatever remains of the foods they intend to give up for Lent in pancakes 鈥 Dutch or otherwise, the traditional food for today.
听听
My faith has many dietary requirements, and restricting certain foods is a feature of many other religions too. I recall a member of my congregation once telling me of an experience in hospital where a nurse looked at her patient information and said 鈥極h you鈥檙e Jewish. That means you eat different food鈥︹

It struck me as rather disappointing that a four thousand year-old religion with its history of ideas and beliefs, with traditions and customs intended to foster those beliefs should be reduced to a comment about what we eat. Of course, there鈥檚 a level of self-discipline that people can cultivate by paying careful attention to what they consume, but I like to think that there鈥檚 more to religion than that.

I believe that the purpose of any religion is to encourage its followers to think about themselves, their community and their relationships to others within that community. So I think the connection between food and faith should be seen as a means to an end. Religion shouldn鈥檛 be so much about what goes into one鈥檚 mouth as what comes out of it: in words that foster kindness, respect and compassion for one鈥檚 fellow human beings.
