INSIDE SONG: MISS OTIS REGRETS
In a new series for Music Matters, Professor Cliff Eisen goes 'Inside Song,' forensically examining the music and lyrics of some of the greatest songs in musical history, and telling the stories behind the melodies.
Today, drawing room parody or civil rights anthem? Cliff tells the fascinating tale behind Cole Porter's 1934 song 'Miss Otis Regrets’, the sad and shocking tale of a society lady who is seduced and then abandoned by a lover, shoots him dead and is taken from jail by a lynch mob.
HANNS EISLER
The composer Hanns Eisler, one of the 20th century's most unconventional and politicized composers, is revealed in a series of conversations transcribed in a new book, ‘Brecht, Music and Culture: Hanns Eisler and Hans Bunge’.
From his exile from Nazi Germany, to his collaborations with Brecht and their life in Hollywood. Petroc talks to translator Sabine Berendse, and Eisler expert Erik Levi about the composer's colourful life and music.
