Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

Tomorrow night is the beginning of Passover, and we will be holding a Seder, the Passover meal,聽 with loads of people round the table, telling the Passover story鈥..

The Israelites were slaves in Egypt. They had gone there originally as welcome guests, after Joseph 鈥 of technicolour dreamcoat fame, had become Pharaoh鈥檚 trusted assistant, and ensured no-one starved during a 7 year famine. But, roll on hundreds of years,聽 and 鈥淭here arose a Pharaoh who knew not Joseph鈥. Slavery and horrors ensued, and finally the Israelites left, under Moses鈥 leadership, after 10 terrible plagues were inflicted on the Egyptians. They left in such haste they didn鈥檛 have time to let their bread rise- so we eat matzah, unleavened bread, for the seven days of Passover, remembering that hasty journey, and remembering that life is never secure.

For matzah, a bit like water biscuits, flat, indigestible, and very crumbly, does two things. It鈥檚 described as the bread of affliction. It鈥檚 poor people鈥檚 bread, it鈥檚 the bread of suffering. It reminds us of what life can throw at us, and it tells us to 鈥榢now the heart of the stranger, because you were stranger sin the land of Egypt.鈥 So it鈥檚 got a strong moral message- to look after strangers, asylum seekers, and refugees.

But it has an internal message too. Normal yeast risen bread, all puffed up, can be interpreted as reminding us of how arrogant we can become as human beings. Puffed up with pride, we forget we鈥檙e ordinary and insignificant. So, once a year, eating flat, indigestible matzah, we recognise that we鈥檙e utterly insignificant, as insignificant as matzah, flat bread that tastes of nothing. And it is a message to our inner souls.

I love the two messages side by side- the external one, remembering who you were, and looking after the foreigners and strangers. And the internal one, remembering who you are, and learning to be humble once again, because we鈥檙e only human. It鈥檚 a lesson for all of us, and you can鈥檛 help taking it seriously if you鈥檙e eating matzah for 7 whole days!
