The election campaign turns to tax as the Conservatives, Labour and the Lib Dems each claim their plans would make ordinary people better off.

The start of a new tax year - eight days into the election campaign - sparks a row between the main parties over whose tax policies will put more money in voters' pockets. Major reforms to pensions come into effect making it easier for people aged 55 and over to access their savings. And new rules come into force banning small shops across the UK from displaying cigarettes and other tobacco products at the tills.
