The Abbey Singers

The Abbey Singers

The Abbey Singers was formed in 1970 by Ronald Porter and the present conductor is John Harmar-Smith.听 Over the years all the Abbey Singers鈥 conductors have all devoted considerable time, effort and shared expertise to develop high standards of performance from the choir, and all are held in the highest esteem by members both past and present.

The choir name is taken from the 鈥渘ew town鈥 of Newtownabbey, created in 1958, and choir rehearsals have been held in the church hall at St Patrick鈥檚 Church of Ireland in Jordanstown, Newtownabbey for the last 40 years.听The Abbey Singers continue to maintain strong relationships with the Newtownabbey Borough.

The choir has performed many large-scale choral works including Vivaldi鈥檚 Gloria, Gounod, Faure, and Mozart and gave the first performance in Ireland of John Rutter鈥檚 鈥淩equiem鈥 in 1989. 听Abbey Singers have regularly performed excerpts from Handel鈥檚 Messiah in many venues across Northern Ireland, and recently joined 鈥淭he Really Big Chorus鈥 event, singing Messiah in The Royal Albert Hall, under the leadership of Sir David Willcocks in 2009 and again in 2011 with conductor Brian Kay 听-听amazing experiences.

The choir has recently competed successfully in the Cork International Music Festival and the llkley Music Festival in Yorkshire.

John Harmar-Smith

John Harmar-Smith

John lived in London for almost 30 years and his introduction to the music world there was as a trainee sound engineer at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Entry to the Royal Academy of Music followed, where he studied conducting informally with Brian Brockless and piano with Jean Harvey and Hamish Milne.

He then worked at EMI鈥檚 Abbey Road Studios, editing their classical recording output for four years. Various other creative roles followed, including spells as Assistant Producer/Director for 大象传媒 Television鈥檚 Religious Department and Weekend Producer for British Satellite Broadcasting鈥檚 Arts Programmes in 1989, despite the 大象传媒 staff who would unkindly assert that 鈥渕ore people have seen the Loch Ness Monster than BSB鈥.鈥 Conducting highlights include a sell-out Mozart 鈥楻equiem鈥 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields and a staged production of Stravinsky鈥檚 鈥The Soldier鈥檚 Tale at the 1983 Greenbelt Festival. Production highlights include 鈥Commercialised Christmas鈥, a 5鈥 prize-winning film for 大象传媒 Television, set to part of Beethoven鈥檚 4th Piano Concerto, and 鈥楢 Portrait in Sound 鈥, a 30鈥 profile of the Royal College of Music, presented by broadcaster Richard Baker. In 1999, he made a light-hearted and enjoyable theatrical debut, playing the part of the bad-tempered stockbroker Elisa J Whitney in the Phil beach Society鈥檚 production of Cole Porter鈥檚 鈥楢nything Goes鈥. He was appointed Conductor of the Antrim Choral Society in September 2011 and is delighted to have been recently appointed Music Director of the Abbey Singers in September 2012.

Bangor International Choral Festival

Bangor International Choral Festival

Founded in 1993 by Roberta Dunlop, the Festival has just completed its 22nd year.听 The Festival is the only purely Choral Festival in Northern Ireland and the aim of the Festival was, and still is, to be all inclusive irrespective of age, ability or background and welcomes Primary, Secondary, Grammar and Special Needs Schools as well as Youth and Adult Choirs.

Organised by a loyal and dedicated Committee of 6 people, the Festival runs smoothly over a 4 day period with competitions sponsored by the local Council, Organisations and Businesses, without whose support the event could not be staged.听 The Festival also depends heavily on the voluntary Stewards from Bangor Ladies Choir who give of their time to usher, cater and generally look after the visiting choirs and again without this help the Festival could not offer the range of hospitality available.

The Festival is well known for its friendliness and encouragement to all competitors and choirs return time and again to participate.听 It is these characteristics which make the Festival welcoming and notable to so many choirs across the UK, ROI and beyond.

The Festival website gives all the details needed for visitors coming to compete or to listen.
