Pause for Thought
Today is the anniversary of a shocking event. On this day in 1981 there was an attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II as he drove round St Peter’s Square in an open jeep. The assassin was Ali Agca, a Turkish man who was immediately arrested and eventually imprisoned. Agca kept changing his story but many people believe that communist secret agents put him up to it because the Pope was backing Solidarity, the freedom movement which eventually undermined the Polish communist government. The Pope was hit by two bullets to the stomach but went on to make a full recovery.
The two years later, Pope John Paul did an amazing thing – he visited Agca in prison and asked people to pray for ‘my brother Ali Agca whom I have completely forgiven.’ A photo of that meeting is a remarkable icon of forgiveness, with the two men sitting opposite each other in a bare prison cell. So for me on this day, the man we now call St John Paul is an inspiration to be forgiving. I believe Forgiveness takes time and effort before we can achieve it because it comes from spiritual strength not weakness. If I am wronged, resentment and bitterness may naturally well up inside me. I then have to make a choice: either to nurture that resentment or to work on letting it go. If I nurture resentment, I experience a second injury only this time I do it to myself. Bitterness is corrosive and like rust, it’s easy to remove at the start but once it gets a grip it’s completely destructive. Nobody can do my forgiving for me so I hope that the image of the Pope reconciled with the assassin can inspire people to live out the prayer that Jesus taught us: forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.Â
