Tom Service interviews the pianist Helene Grimaud ahead of her forthcoming UK recitals in Birmingham and London.Ìý Grimaud’s talents are multi-faceted: alongside her concert appearances she also finds time to be a committed conservationist, human rights activist and writer, also devoting time to her wolf sanctuary in America. For Rambert's new dance work 'Dark Arteries' which premieres at Sadler's Wells before touring around the country, the choreographer Mark Baldwin joins forces with composer Gavin Higgins and the Tredegar Town Band - a first for dance. The piece examines the legacy of the coal industry and is inspired by the miners’ strike in 1984-5. It commemorates the 30th anniversary of the end of the strike and uses the unique sound of brass band music, whose heritage stems from the pit communities, to reflect on themes of upheaval and renewal.

Carlo Gesualdo was one of the most individual composers of the late Renaissance, writing intensely expressive madrigals which take chromaticism to extremes for the time. His pre-meditated double-murder of his wife and her lover has added to his allure.Ìý

Tom discusses his life and music with Robert Hollingworth, music director of I Fagiolini, together with director John La Bouchardière and forensic psychiatrist Dr Ruth McAllister. Together they have collaborated on a new project, Betrayal, commissioned by the Barbican Centre, exploring the tortuous life and music of Gesualdo and telling individual stories in counterpoint with dance. The piece is being performed at suitable urban locations: Village Underground in London, Cambridge Junction in Cambridge and in a multi-storey car park in Salisbury.
