Katie Derham continues a week featuring the 大象传媒 Scottish Symphony Orchestra who, to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Erik Chisholm, recently gave the first performance for more than 60 years of the Glasgow-born composer's Violin Concerto. Last heard at the 1952 Edinburgh Festival, it's a tour-de-force for both soloist and orchestra, richly coloured by the composer's deep interest in Indian classical music. Around this, two works strongly associated with Chisholm who conducted the British premiere of Mozart's opera Idomeneo with the Glasgow Grand Opera Society in 1934, from which we'll hear the exquisite ballet music, and Bartok's second orchestral suite. Chisholm befriended Bartok, bringing him to Glasgow twice to perform recitals of his music, and Chisholm was described as a 'Scottish Bartok' because of his use of folk idioms in his music. Plus Mozart's Fourth Horn Concerto with soloist Richard Watkins, and a selection from Mahler's song cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn with the mezzo-soprano Alice Coote.
