Agricultural societies have been the backbone of British farming, and the Westmorland Agricultural Society, like most others, holds an annual show, a silage competition and provides training for farmers. But their Chief Executive, Christine Knipe is an Elton John fan and after years of discussions with his promoters, she's finally persuaded them to get Elton to come and play their show field in south Cumbria. So that's Sir Elton John, one of the world's best-selling musicians playing the Westmorland Agricultural Showground, a breezy field which is usually grazed buy a flock of herdwick sheep.

The catering's being done by local farmers, some of whom have had their food hygiene and marketing training delivered by the Society. And the funds raised should help secure the future of the Westmorland Show, founded in 1799, and help safeguard the crucial role the society plays in equipping farmers for the 21st century.
