A Princess Suffragette and Antarctic Midwinter

Anita Anand joins Cerys to tell the story of Sophia Duleep Singh, a princess and a suffragette. Plus Cerys celebrates the Antarctic midwinter on the day of the Summer Solstice.

Broadcaster Anita Anand joins Cerys to tell the fascinating story of Sophia Duleep Singh, a princess Suffragette.

The daughter of a Maharajah, and god-daughter of Queen Victoria, Sophia was raised a genteel aristocratic Englishwoman: presented at court and photographed wearing the latest fashions for the society pages. But she took on the establishment, using her privileged position to fight for female suffrage.

Cerys also chats to Alastair Wilson, zoologist, and British Antarctic Survey station commander. He tells us how the staff of the British Antarctic Survey are celebrating Midwinter, surrounded by penguins, ice and not much sun.

Susheela Raman and Sam Mills tell us about an event celebrating sacred music from the Christian East. And there is a celebration of the brilliant career of Bill Withers, who was only recently inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
