Aurelio Live, Highlights from Tiken Jah Fakoly
Lopa Kothari and Mary Ann Kennedy with coverage of the 2015 Womad festival, with live sets from Mbongwana Star, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Kasse Mady Diabate and Aurelio.
Live from Charlton Park in Wiltshire, Lopa Kothari and Mary Ann Kennedy introduce continued coverage of this year's WOMAD, the leading festival of world music.
Tonight's programme is rooted firmly in Africa, kicking off with Mbongwana Star, the latest genre-defying music to come out of Kinshasa, a group that mixes Congolese guitar with influences from Afrobeat, psychedelia and dub. We hear from Ivorian reggae star Tiken Jah Fakoly performing songs from his most recent album Dernier Appel and from French-Nigerien desert blues three-piece Ezza. The great Malian griot Kasse Mady Diabate offers a taste of traditional Malian music, his powerful songs in the bambara language backed by the flowing and expressive accompaniment of kora, balafon and ngoni. French electronic producer Jerome Ettinger brings some of the ancient instruments of north Africa into the 21st century with his Egyptian Project; we also hear Egyptian percussion virtuoso Hossam Ramzy in an exclusive truck session. And, from approximately 11.00pm, we join Honduran star and leading light of the Garifuna collective, Aurelio Martinez live for his set in the Siam tent.
