The surprise arrest in the Lucy Beale case sends shockwaves through the Square. As the residents struggle to come to terms with the news, further truths come to light.

Ian’s shocked Jane didn’t throw Lucy’s belongings in the canal as she claimed. Jane explains she kept the phone and purse as an insurance policy. Ian is furious that she is suggesting that they let Ben go down for Lucy’s murder. Bobby and Cindy enter the living room, the loose floor board raised, and spot Lucy’s belongings. When the doorbell rings, Ian heads to answer it, hissing at Jane to put the purse and phone back where she found them. He opens the door to Sharon, Jay, Lola and Billy. Sharon forces Jay to tell Ian Ben didn’t really find Lucy’s belongings - he mugged her for them after she pulled out of their plan to run away to Florida. Ian’s stunned. Jay admits that Phil knows about it too, which is news to a fuming Sharon.

Ian agrees to meet them in the café and Sharon asks to be left alone with him to talk. She tentatively asks Ian if he thinks Ben could be guilty - if it was an accident then he would only be put away for manslaughter. Ian slowly starts to see the possibility that everyone believes Ben would be capable of killing Lucy. At home, Bobby overhears Cindy and Jane in the kitchen talking about Lucy’s belongings and Ben. Later on, Ian finds Jane in the living room and tells her what Sharon has said. He suggests that they look at the situation pragmatically; Ben is damaged already - whereas Bobby isn’t... They realise what they are saying is ridiculous and decide to dispose of Lucy’s things. Ian pulls back the floorboard but the purse and phone are gone. As Ian questions Cindy, Jane reports that’s Bobby has gone missing and panic sets in. Meanwhile, Bobby determinedly approaches the Police station clutching the plastic bag containing Lucy’s purse and phone…

The police search the Mitchells’ house for evidence as Ben sits in a prison cell at the police station. Phil calls Ritchie Scott for her help. As the police search, DS Bryant suggests that Phil could help him put Max away for Lucy’s murder but Phil refuses to grass on anyone. At the station, Ben is taped as part of an Identity parade. DCI Marsden tries to provoke a reaction from him by questioning his sexuality. Outside the room, Keeble comments on the fact that it was illegal to question him in this way but Marsden shrugs this off. The taxi driver, Kelmendi, identifies Ben as one of the men he saw with Lucy on the night of her murder.

Ritchie bursts in and points out the illegality of organising an ID line up without consulting her first. She briefs Ben for his interview and he is careful to respond to all questions with ‘no comment’. Keeble reminds him that his lack of cooperation could count against him in court. Kelmendi’s eager Keeble helps him with his immigration tribunal appeal as promised; as they discuss the deal outside, Max pulls up in his car with Abi. Minutes later, excited Keeble rushes in to the police station to report Kelmendi’s identified Max as the other man who was with Lucy on the night of her murder. To Keeble’s frustration, Marsden’s more interested in questioning Ben.

Abi berates Jay for not telling her Ben was released before the night of Lucy’s murder. Lola finds a distraught Jay on a bench in the Square gardens and calms him down. He is worried that the Mitchells are going to push him out as he isn’t really family and frets that if Ben goes down, he will too. Lola insists he’s not alone and kisses him.

A worried Abi bickers with Max about Ben and determines to go to the police station to see him. Abi thinks it would suit Max if Ben went to prison as it would get him off the hook, insinuates Max had more of a motive than Ben and questions where he went the night Lucy died. She storms out and Carol warns Max to follow her before she repeats what she said to the police. Max pursues her in his car and a reluctant Abi gets in.
