On the face of it, you might not expect to find a great deal of science at the National Eisteddfod. After all, it's the the premier festival for music,arts and performance in Wales and not some travelling laboratory.聽聽And yet the 'Steddfod's Science Pavilion - or more accurately the Pabell Gwyddoniaeth - consistently delivers some excellent science lessons, in a very family- friendly and accessible way.

That's why the Science Cafe returns to the Maes (the Eisteddfod site) once again this year. Adam Walton learns more about a new link up between the National and Urdd (or junior) Eisteddfod and the Royal Astronomical Society. He talks to one of the Welsh scientists working at the national synchrotron facility - the Diamond Light Source centre in Cambridge聽 -聽 which has a marvellous display in Lego in the pavillion this year.

And he hears why understanding some of the science and engineering behind music is so important to performers. All that and the famous聽Eisteddfod fanfare played on a simple garden hose with a plastic funnel attached!聽聽
