Science of the mind
Adam Walton explores psychology in this week's programme - from analysing failures in health care, to looking at our levels of happiness.
Adam travels to Rhyl's Royal Alexandra Hospital, to meet recently qualified clinical psychologist Dr Michelle Rydon-Grange, who works at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. While at the School of Psychology at Bangor University, Michelle produced a research paper, which was published in the Journal of Medical Ethics which looked at how psychological principles could be used to explain healthcare failings. In the paper, the problem was broken down into three areas - a "culture of fear", "aversion control and negative reinforcement" and "low morale".
Science Cafe's Alan Daulby reports from a public lecture "the psychology of happiness" at Venue Cymru in Llandudno. We hear from one of the lecturers, Dr Rebecca Sharp, who explains how behaviour analysis can be used to assess happiness. The "Health & Wellbeing Public Lectures" series are a collaboration between Bangor University and Grwp Llandrillo Menai, and continue until February 2016.
We also hear from Dr Emyr Williams, a senior lecturer in psychology at Glyndwr University who has been studying non-tradtional religious beliefs in teenagers, as part of his ongoing research into the psychology of religion.
