Stories

Mitzvah Day Cooking

Mitzvah Day is a Jewish led day of hands-on social action, which brings people together through volunteering to help those in need in their local community. Mitzvah Day was first piloted in the UK in 2005. This year the main day will be Sunday 22 November (some projects have already begun), with over 1000 projects taking place across the UK and internationally

Mitzvah Day brings Jews together with people from other faiths on the shared agenda of helping others. It builds bridges hopefully, for the long term. One of Mitzvah Day’s favourite projects is Mitzvah Day Cooking and for Songs of Praise Connie joined one session bringing Jews and Christians together to cook food for a local homeless shelter.

Adam Pearson

Songs of Praise meet up with actor and presenter Adam Pearson. Adam was born with neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes non-cancerous lumps to grow on nerve tissue.Ìý It affects 1 in 2,300 people, but in Adam’s case the lumps have grown on his face.Ìý

Adam talks to us about how his condition has affected his childhood, his faith and how he has found acceptance and solace from the Church community.ÌýThe future is looking brighter for Adam and he’ll also talk about his future career in the spotlight and how he’s now being seen as the spokesperson for people with facial disfigurement.

Cathedral Catwalk

Songs of Praise throws on its glad-ragsÌýand heads on down to St Albans Cathedral as it plays host to the centrepiece event of St Albans Fashion week.Ìý For two nights its nave is home to the longest catwalk in the UK as dozens of models, wearing the latest frocks from local designers, strut their stuff in front of over 1200 people – with all profits going to Cancer Research UK.

Always on-trend Diane Louise Jordan meets the brains behind the operation Ellena Ophira to find out how she got her inspiration and chats with Sub-Dean Richard Watson to find out the impact it has had on both the cathedral and its congregation.

Interfaith Singing – The Mixed Up Chorus

The Mixed Up Chorus is an interfaith choir set up by the Three Faiths Forum (3FF) . 3FF was founded in 1997 by Sir Sigmund Sternberg, the late Sheikh Dr Zaki Badawi and Revd Dr Marcus Braybrooke to encourage friendship, goodwill and understanding between people of different faiths, especially between Muslims, Christians and Jews.

Today, it works not only with leaders but with people at all levels of society, running programmes that give people from all walks of life opportunities to learn, engage and build new relationships across community lines.

The Mixed Up Chorus was set up 2 years ago and has proved popular with nearly 80 members and a list of performances ranging from ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 3 to the MP of the year event.
