Pause For Thought
From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:
The day before
yesterday my beloved mum died. She was writing her Christmas cards when she
suddenly stiffened, sighed and slipped away. For the woman who’s written a
letter once a week to each of us, her four children, from the day we first left
home until now, and always took time at Christmas to send 40 or more
hand-written letters to old friends, it couldn’t have been a more fitting end.
Mum was one of those people who live their
faith rather than make a great song and dance about it. She was the hub of our
family, always there for each of us. She had a real heart for community life,
helping others in time of difficulty and constantly stepping up to the mark
behind the scenes at village events. She was fiercely independent and much
preferred to give than receive, which she always did so unselfconsciously and
quietly. In this last couple of years when she’s needed to accept the help of
neighbours and friends, she was astonished by how much others wanted to share
with her, the care she’s always shown to them. She had no idea just how much
she brought the gift of grace to others.
Like many people who experience bereavement at this time, Christmas will not be the same this year, but I’m also conscious of how much mum’s life embodied the true spirit of this Christian festival. As part of its festive display one of my local shops has the words, ‘Get what you want, not what you need’ in the window. It’s the opposite of how my mum lived and what Christmas is really about. At the heart of the Nativity story is the message that when ordinary people, like Mary, the mother of Jesus, and my own mum, bring love to birth in the world through their selfless actions, they lighten the lives of those they touch. Such a gift is priceless today when we see so much pain around us. Unlike so many of the presents we’ll exchange on Christmas Day, this gift will live on in our hearts and lives long after we’ve cleared discarded wrapping paper and, in my case, laid my Mum to rest.
