Pause For Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:
For close on 20 years I was Sir Terry Wogan鈥檚 guest on Pause for Thought. When I was down the line, as I am this morning, Terry would introduce me with these words. 鈥淎nd now we hop across the Irish sea聽 to listen to a man who won鈥檛 even get out of bed to broadcast鈥. It was his way of painting a picture for his audience and ensuring that I didn鈥檛 take myself too seriously.
Terry was my hero and my friend. We knew each other since his broadcasting days in Dublin and when he came to the 大象传媒 our friendship grew as the years passed.
I was lucky to learn about broadcasting from The Master. His superb voice, uncanny timing and above all his impeccable use of language were unique to him.
What I learned was humility, gentleness, generosity, thoughtfulness and respect for our listeners. Typically he over-simplified his broadcasting genius when he said:聽 鈥淜eep your wits about you, be polite, go home and enjoy your dinner.鈥
Home was where Terry found his true self.
Lady Helen and their 3 children were the delight of his life. He met wife Helen at a Tennis hop in Dublin and drove her home from their first date in a bashed up Morris Minor. Last Thursday when I visited Terry for the last time, it was the lovely Helen who was still holding his hand over fifty years later and their children were caring for them, as they had cared for their children 鈥 with compassion and love.
Terry said he wasn鈥檛 religious. We kidded each other endlessly. He claimed he was an atheist. I said I didn鈥檛 believe in his God either. 鈥淕od comes to you disguised as your life鈥, I told him. Terry was everything God could want in a human being.
He raised our spirits, encouraged his beloved TOGS, helped raise millions for Children In Need and made us laugh uproariously at ourselves.
Like you I鈥檓 heart-broken. In Ireland we say 鈥淲e shall never see his like again鈥 and we won鈥檛. But today let鈥檚 just thank God for the wonderful human being that was Sir Terry Wogan.
