Prayer for the Day, Richard Hill
Good Morning.
On 15 March 1962, President John F Kennedy gave a speech to the US Congress in which he formally addressed the issue of consumer rights. He was the first world leader to do so, the consumer movement now marks the 15th March every year as World Consumer Rights Day.聽 Fifty four years on consumer rights are still important today.聽
I hate getting those phone calls offering me help with my PPI claim; or the ones when somebody is purporting to be from a software company pretending that my computer has a virus and then offering to help me for a fee; or the insidious emails 聽pretending to be from my bank t
Thank goodness for all those trusted organisations we can turn to for help when we're uncertain and unsure about what rights we have as consumers and we're utterly confused.. Radio 4 does its bit too! There solid counsel from the consumer programme, 鈥淵ou and Y ours鈥, and also from 鈥淢oneybox鈥. Whether it is, pension fraud or those annoying phone calls, these and other trusted voices helps us with the challenges of commerce today.
As I mark World consumer rights day commemorating Kennedy鈥檚 speech I鈥檓 also recalling that long before 1962 the Old Testament prophets had been crying out for people to be treated fairly and to treat one another fairly.
Micah says, 鈥淲hat does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.鈥滸ood advice for businesses and consumers.
Lord,Help us not merely to seek justice and fairness from others but also to show it in our dealings.Amen
