Paul Gambaccini blends digital tracks from the week's US charts of songs, albums, R&B, country and rock hits with LP and singles tracks from the last six decades.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
Each week, songs are played connected to members of 'The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame'. We hear 'Choo Choo Ch'Boogie' by Louis Jordan and 'Born Under A Bad Sign' by Albert King. In 'A Matter Of Life And Death', we celebrate the birthday on this date in 1947 of Emmylou Harris by playing her version of the Dolly Parton song 'To Daddy'. Paul pays tribute to Lee Andrews, who has recently died, by featuring his 1958 US hit with The Hearts 'Tear Drops'. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'Hello' by Lionel Richie and a different song with the same title by Adele.
In the feature called 'Beyond The Sea', Paul plays a song from a UK artist's biggest-selling album in America. Tonight, we hear tracks from LPs by Lulu and Robin Trower. 'The Other Number Ones' are records that reached the top of the American chart in 'Cash Box' magazine, but not in the Hot 100 of the other US chart publication 'Billboard'. This week's examples are by Blood, Sweat & Tears and Randy Newman.
Our R&B number ones are from 1977 and now by William Bell and Lalah Hathaway. We hear Country number ones from 1958 and this week by Don Gibson and Blake Shelton. Our featured past and present Rock number ones are by Bastille and Twenty One Pilots. The Number One in the Album Sales Chart is 'Hymns That Are Important To Us' by bluegrass duo Joey + Rory. The best-selling song of the week is '7 Years' by Lukas Graham.
